For many, what draws them to Bali is the water. The incredible beaches and surfing opportunities are a magnet for those who love the outdoors. Bali is also part of the Coral Triangle, a high biodiversity area for marine species. In this particular area alone there’s over 500 species of reef-building coral – about 7 times as many as the entire Caribbean! Much of the island is surrounded by coral and for this reason it’s a hugely popular area for diving and snorkelling too.

Whether you’re just considering a holiday to Bali or it’s somewhere that’s always been on your bucket list, read our destination highlights below to discover even more reasons why you should head there in a heartbeat...

Sights to see

Bali is filled with unforgettable sights, from the picture-perfect beaches to the mystical temples. Some of the main points of interest include Tanah Lot, a rock formation which sits just off the coast and is host to a pilgrimage temple. Those who want to channel their inner adventurer should head to Mount Batur, an active volcano which sits at the centre of two concentric calderas, one of which is filled with a lake. Head here for a sunrise trek to watch the sun come up over this beautiful landscape. For one of the most iconic sights of Bali, head to Subak Irrigation System which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The system is used to water the rice paddy fields on the island and consists of five terraced fields and water temples that cover 49,000 acres.

Unforgettable Experiences

Due to the diverse number of coral species in Bali, this is an excellent place to explore under the surface and you’ll find a number of boat, scuba diving and snorkelling tours offering a chance to see some of the beautiful marine life here. Bali is also known as a popular resort for surfing. If you’re a beginner head to Kuta where an 8km stretch of beach waits, or if you’re more experienced go to the Bukit Peninsula, along Bali’s southwest coast for some more adrenaline-serving swells.

Those seeking something more subdued will enjoy the spa, meditation and yoga culture which has really taken root in Bali. There are numerous retreats that aim to unburden you with the stresses of everyday life, but taking part in a yoga class at sunrise is a true reflection of the calming influence of this exotic paradise.

Delicious Dining

Tantalise your tastebuds with fresh Balinese dishes that have been enhanced with traditional blends of spices. Some of the local dishes include Babi Guling which is a roasted suckling pig and Babur Sum Sum which is a rice porridge with palm sugar sauce and roasted coconut.

Be sure to visit Gianyar Night Market where the sounds of chefs banging pots and pans mixes with the aromatic scents of spices – it’s an authentic experience and fantastic opportunity to see food is a part of the culture here.
