Why Choose a Cruise in February?

February is the last and often coldest month of Winter in the Northern Hemisphere. With the promise of Spring in the air, this is the perfect time to visit warmer climes or to make use of the crisp air to explore countries where you can see the awe-inspiring northern lights.  And because February is considered the off season in many popular destinations, there are some incredible deals available.

February is the time for romantic Valentine’s day cruises, which is the perfect opportunity to spoil your beloved.  Celebrate the most romantic month of the year with a magical cruise for two. What could be more romantic than seeing the world together? Whether it’s your first Valentine’s Day together or your 50th, a Valentines cruise is an experience you and your partner will surely never forget.

Then there is also Leap Year cruises, which happens every four years, the next one taking place in 2020. There are many to choose from and here is a fun fact for ladies who have waited too long for their men to propose.  For traditionalists, once every four years, on 29th February (Leap Day), a woman is allowed to take her destiny in her own hands and ask a man to marry her.  The tradition is thought to date back to the 5th century, when, legend has it, an Irish nun called St Bridget complained to St Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitors to propose. So, they struck a deal. St Patrick decreed this one day in February, which occurs once every four years, when women were allowed to propose.

Celebrate Chinese New Year’s in China

With our own New Year celebrations being a thing of the past, there is a possibility to have another New Year’s celebration if you head to the Far East for Chinese New Year.  Although the time of year slightly differs from year to year, it is currently held in February for two weeks.  They calculate the date on the Lunisolar calendar, which is two months shorter than the solar, which leads to it being celebrated at a different date every year.

Chinese New Year is celebrated by more than 20% of the world. It’s the most important holiday in China and to Chinese people all over.  To start with, celebrations last a whole fifteen days!  This festivity is the time for family reunion, which is the most important part of the Chinese New Year; people will normally visit relatives and friends, do some shopping, watch traditional Chinese shows, launch fireworks, and plan for the coming year. Visitors from all over the world are also welcomed to join in the celebrations.

The Chinese New Year will sometimes be highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honour of heaven, earth, the family ancestors and other gods. The most fireworks are set off in the world that night as the ancient Chinese believed that firecrackers are supposed to scare off monsters and bad luck. In the morning, firecrackers are used again to welcome the new year and good luck.  And one thing is for sure, with everything there is to do and see at this time, your Chinese New Year is bound to be a fire cracker too!

Mediterranean Cruises in February

While there is no denying that even the Med is pretty cold in February and that the seas can be quite rough, there are a few reasons why you may prefer going this time of year.  The main reason is that this is probably the cheapest month of the year to visit and also the quietest, which means you get the opportunity to see cities in a new light.  This means that rather than rushing from sight to sight, unable to get a table in a restaurant or cafe to appreciate a town square or a work of art, for example, you can take your time in a place, or a museum, without crowds jostling you to move on.

As for life on board your cruise ship in the Mediterranean this time of year, this is one of the few times which you will have plenty of rest and relaxation due to fewer people on board and almost no children. No waiting in queues or going to a show only to find that it’s full.  And as there are often fewer people on board, you will receive more personalised attention when it comes to shore excursions.  Also look out for on board specials at places like the Spa and Fitness Centre.
